Baldock, An ancient town, founded by the Knights Templar in the 12th Century offering a quaint old-world charm. Much of its structure is pre 19th century and St.Mary's church dates back to the 14th Century. Samuel Pepys spent the night in Baldock on August 6, 1661. He didn't record the name of the inn but but wrote: " Took horse for London, and with much ado, the ways being hard, got to Baldwick (Baldock). There lay, and had a good supper by myself. Hoddesdon,linked with Broxbourne, the town centre has a brick clock tower dating back to 1835 and built on the site of the ancient chapel of St.Katherine, built in the 14th century. The bell was somewhat newer and installed in 1510. Nearest BR is Broxbourne. Letchworth Garden City, the world's first Garden City, due to celebrate it's 100th birthday after the Millenium, it is now enjoying a massive facelift for the celebrations. Nearest BR is Lecthworth. London Colney,the village can be traced back to 1335. Visited by many ancient Royals. Once the home to 27 coaching inns within one mile. Stevenage, split into two, the old town with olde worlde pubs, unusual shops but sadly negleted by the big commercial chains, due to it's redevelopment.There is however much for the whole family, in the new town. leisure facilties are plentiful and the retail parks are full of the usual big stores. Nearest BR is Stevenage. Tring, a pleasant picnic can be had here within it's three hunderd acre Tring Park, see the Chiltern Hills and famous Grand Union Canal.
