Theatre in St. Albans and one of the premier drama companies

We were founded
in 1934 by Arthur Swinson and Terry Newell, together with
eight other young actors from the St Albans Abbey Fellowship
who made up the original Ten. Terry, our late President,
died in 2001.
The Abbey Theatre
was constructed with funds raised by the Company; Sir Michael
Redgrave laid its foundation stone in 1967.
Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother opened the Abbey Theatre
in April 1968 when she came to see our first production
in the new theatre, The Recruiting Officer by George Farquahar.
Her Majesty sat in seat C9 on which you will find her name.
She was one of many people who have sponsored a seat.
Our theatre
was financed in the main by the fund raising efforts of
the members and from the proceeds of performances.
