Mill Green Museum
& Mill
If you have an interest in breadmaking or indeed windmills
and watermills, you will not be disappointed with Mill Green Museum
& Mill. Mill Green is a tiny village situated between Welwyn Garden
City and Hatfield, Hertfordshire.
Bring a picnic or enjoy a traditional Sunday cream tea (from Easter
to September, Sundays only) . The mill and museum open all year, Tuesday
to Sunday plus bank holidays and every school holiday there's lots
of things for children to do. There are lively events and activities
programme, visit www.welhat.gov.uk/Museum
for the latest programme. Families and groups are warmly welcomed,
there's always something new to see as they change exhibitions regularly.
Explore the fascinating 300 year old water will, restored to full
working order and visit the local history museum in the former millers
house back to the 16th century. The Water Mill is especially worth
visiting on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sunday when the miller is working
the machinery and can show visitors how the flour is made.
There are
three main sections/galleries. Two house local artefacts that range
from Roman times to the present day, the third features special exhibitions
which change regularly. There are craft demonstrations and special
events during summer weekends and staff are on hand to help with your
enquiries and research.
You will see a working, sympathetically restored, eighteenth century
watermill adjacent to the museum itself. The watermill was in use
until 1911 grinding locally grown corn from nearby farmers, sadly
competition from larger mills forced its closure.
The mill was worn and tired, suffering from natural decay and in need
of a full restoration. Works were carried out between 1979 and 1986
and now it boasts one of the few remaining water-powered corn mills
still producing flour.
Some small revenue comes to the mill as flour milled there is supplied
to a local bakery that uses it to produce their Mill Green loaf. You
can also buy Mill Green bread at many branches of Simmon's Bakery,
across Hertfordshire. Flour is available to buy from the Mill in six
different sizes. Mill Green flour is pure, simple and organic. Nothing
is put in, nothing is taken out, except some coarse bran. Milling
times are subject to demand for flour and weather conditions. www.welhat.gov.uk/Museum
