Because an individual
sells slimming products, it doesn't make them a dietitian. In fact the
actual title 'Dietitian' may only be used by appropriately trained professionals
and such individuals must be registered the Health Professions Council.
You are likely to discuss diet and nutrition problems with your GP and
the doctor may refer you to a Registered Dietitian. You have may choose
to see a Registered Dietitian who practises privately and of course pay
for their services. Consultations with dietitians within the NHS are free.
Registered Dietitians (RDs) are the only qualified health professionals
that may assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems.
Registered dietitians are unique in the fact that they use state-of-the-art
and up to date public health and scientific research on food, health and
related diseases. They have the skills and expertise to use this information
and translate into guidance enabling patients to make appropriate lifestyle
and food choices based on solid research and evidential facts.
Dietitians are the only nutrition professionals to be statutorily regulated,
and governed by an ethical code, to ensure that they always work to the
highest standard. Dietitians work in the NHS, private practice, industry,
education, research, sport, media, public relations, publishing, NGOs
, local and central government.
