Braughing
is pronounced locally as 'Braffing', it is west of Bishop's Stortford,
off A120, still a quaint village with a delightful 14th century church.
In 1595, deceased Matthew Wall was being carried in his coffin along
Fleece Lane to his funeral. The coffin-bearers slipped on leaves and
consequently dropped the coffin - awakening Matthew, who apprantly
was not dead!. In fact Mathew not only lived for several more years,
but married too. Not forgetting his early 'escape of death' he left
provision in his will for Fleece Lane to be swept clean of leaves
on 2nd October each and every year, after which the funeral bell,
and then a wedding peal, was to be rung. This is now known as "Old
Man's Day" and schoolchildren still sweep the leaves and a service
is held at Matthew's grave.
