Ardeley is on the river Beane, close to Buntingford station and Stevenage. A population of some 464. The manor was given by Athelstane to the Dean and Chapter of St Paul's. Ardeley-Bury once belonged once to the Cornwalls, and passed on to the Chaunceys, then to the Murrays. The church was repaired in 1859. The hamlets of this parish include Cromer and Woodend, in each of which there is a small chapel of ease, and at the latter a Congregational chapel, Parkers Green, Moor Green, Munches Green, and Gardeners End, with portions of Hare Street and Luffenhall.

Cromer Windmill - Ardeley
Cromer Windmill is the last remaining postmill in Hertfordshire. This is the earliest type of English windmill. It gets its name from the massive oak post on which the mill body turns to face the sails into the wind, no matter what its direction. The present mill dates from 1679/81 and was in use until 1923, after which it became derelict. It was given to the Hertfordshire Building Preservation Trust in 1969. After many years of work, the mill has now been restored and is virtually in working order.

The mill was extensively rebuilt about 1860 and its equipment represents the peak of windmill development. The mill has Patent sails, a fantail and centrifugal governors to control the stone clearances.
